Hi Everyone,

In todays post I’ve invited my friend and award winning artist Christine Waara to share her thoughts on “Conquering the Color Green”!

Christine Waara is an award winning artist from Fairport, NY.  Her subjects come from her life experiences: florals, landscapes, and still lifes.   While she primarily paints in watercolors, she also paints in pastel and oil as well.  Christine also teaches and gives demos.  Learn more at http://www.christinewaara.com/.

I’m excited and honored that Christine went out of her way to create a video just for this post! In the video she will do a brief demo on how to mix greens in watercolor both directly on paper and on a palette using warm and cool blues and yellows to get different feelings and effects.

When you think of frogs, what color do you imagine?  Green, of course, if you think of the iconographic red-eyed tree frog, one of the species of frogs, which thankfully is not yet endangered or threatened.

When this tiny nocturnal creature sleeps during the day, it is practically invisible in the green foliage.  My challenge in painting illustrations for the upcoming book about frogs, was to express in variations of green, the transitions between sunset, nightfall, a moonlit night, sunrise and daytime.

Sunset has some back lighting, with the light yellowy greens transitioning to a blue-green in the shaded parts of the painting.

As night falls, but before the moon comes up, the trees are in deep bluish-green shadow, reflecting the blue sky.

As the moon comes higher, the highlights on the green frogs and foliage are a light blue, and the lily pads becoming brighter as they recede into the distance.

After many adventures (no, I won’t give the story away!), and a tiring night for Mom and Dad, the sun at last comes up, and we’re are once again seeing the back-lit green frogs against the blue-green leaf framing a pinky violet sky.

By the time the froggies are on the way home, daylight has arrived, and the golden sunlight reflects on the frogs and foliage.

Do you think the variations of green reflect the time of day accurately?

Are you as excited about seeing the finished Picture Book as I am?  (I’m on painting THIRTEEN out of fifteen!)  Hopefully it will be ready for the Fairport Canal Days show on the weekend of May 31^st.

Finally, the book has had many title permutations, originally called Leap Frog – A Night in the Life of Agalychnis Callidryas Family.  Children’s book illustrator Nancy Lane suggested I have a name with alliteration.  What do you think of “Froglets First Frolic”? – A Night in the Life of Agalychnis Callidryas Family?

It would be possible, because of her formidable talents as an artist and social media expert, to be green with envy of Peggy Martinez.  However, I only feel grateful for her generosity in sharing her skills and knowledge with us.  Martinez for inviting guest artists to her blog, and I can only say many thanks to her for the opportunity to be a guest on Gift of the Rose.

About Me:

A little about me. I spent my childhood on a farm in the plains of the Midwest where creativity was a necessary ruse for entertainment.  Academically I later attended the University of Kansas School of Fine Arts. From then until present, I continue to refine my craft in the world of fine arts. My inspirational point in painting is to tell a story, capture a memory, real or imagined. To create something that might move the spirit and stir in you that same passion by which I am driven.

What “Color of Love” Mean to Me:

The Color of Love has different meanings. We love, share love and interpret love in different way’s. A love for a spouse is certainly not the same type of love we share with a mother, father or our siblings. Therefor, if asked to assign a color to the loves in our lives we might see a rainbow of our favorite hue’s.  My inspiration for painting is like the stirring we get when we pause for a moment.
To look at something and ponder its reasoning for being. A connection can be made and for me, at times, a painting may result as an expression to share. I have an eclectic view of what I like to paint, so who knows what the subject matter might be next.

The immediate thought that comes to mind of the title “Color of Love”, I conclude in one thought, it’s the “Color of Life”, because life is love. Without love and life there is no interest. One aspect complements each other, without life color there is no art and no love. Through art and color we can express the beauty of love!

I’m excited to introduce a talented local artist from my neighborhood. Lisa, attended Nazareth College and then obtained her Masters in Art History while studying in Florence, Italy. A closet artist who volunteered at museums and worked in art galleries, allowing her precisionist persona to shine and hide her inner artistic inclination. Finally, after years of traveling and searching, she settled back home in Rochester NY and decided to integrate her passion and professional life through portraiture with graphite and colored pencils. Who doesn’t love a challenge? As an artist, I enjoy the challenge of
creating texture with graphite and colored pencils. My greatest joy is

America, I finally returned home to Rochester to pursue my love of art.

In a drawing, for me the color of love is the subject itself. People

I started this blog a year ago, as a means to share my progress, challenges and aha moments as I created art for my first art show, “Gift of the Rose’. The exhibit was and will always be dedicated to my sister Margie, who suffered and passed away from asthma in 1999. Through this blog, I have committed myself to raise asthma awareness. I want to express my thanks to the community here that has supported me, the media for publishing my cause, the Golisano Children’s Hospital, local demonstrations and for fantastic followers like you!
